249A-B Cumdach of the Stowe Missal, Ireland, 11th-12th centuries (Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, Ireland)

This cumdach or gilded bronze book-container shows two 'native' or Gaelic Irish warriors armed in traditional style. Neither wear armour or helmets. One is armed with a remarkably short sword with a somewhat conical pommel (A) while the other holds a small round convex buckler with a large boss while wielding a broad-bladed spear.
