Eighth AF

HQ Eighth AF issues its last movement order in ETO. After much reorganization and r edeployment of units, HQ relieves VIII FC from assignment to Eighth AF and directs HQ and HQ Sq to move from Charleroi back to UK (the unit moves to High Wycombe the following day, 17 Jul) where VIII FC is to assume control over all Eighth AF units remaining in UK. HQ Eighth AF is transferred without personnel, equipment, or combat elements to Okinawa, where Eighth and Twentieth AFs are to comprise USASTAF under cmd of Gen Spuatz. By this date over 90,000 persons (more than 50 per cent of the Eighth's strength on 30 Apr 45) have been redeployed to US, N Africa, and various parts of ETO.

Organizational charts show great decrease in Jul in size of Twelfth AF due to redeployment, transfer, disbandment, and discontinuance of 50 units. Only 5 new units are added to the Twelfth. This leaves 77 assigned and 3 attached units compared to 122 assigned and 2 attached the previous month. The Twelfth practically ceases to be a flying AF as only 2 MB gps, a night ftr sq, and a rcn gp remain as flying units. The planes from these units are shortly transferred to AAFSC, MTO.
