The Operational Research Section, organized at Hq VIII BC in Oct 43, is made a special staff section, accountable directly to the CoS. It is composed mostly of civilian specialists trained in statistical analysis and other disciplines pertinent to studying operations of a strat bombing force. The section subsequently proves of great value in improving effectiveness of strat bombing.

6 B-25's, along with 16 P-38's, attack bridge on Mu R between Ywataung and Monywa. Maj Robert A Erdin, piloting the lead MB, pulls up during his bomb run to avoid a tree. He releases his bombs as he noses up, and topples 2 spans of the bridge into the river. Subsequent tests prove this is a good bridgebombing maneuver. The tactic is refined and the sq (490th Sq) becomes so proficient as to gain the sobriquet 'Burma Bridge Busters.' Further N, 11 A-36's and 15 P-51's pound A/F at Myitkyina."

About 20 ftrs attack the formation. 12 P-40's, meeting the returning MBs over Aur Atoll, join battle against the ftrs, claiming more than 10 destroyed. The MBs claim 5 shot down. Several more are destroyed on ground or while taking off during the bombing raid. 9 B-25's from Tarawa hit Aineman I, Jaluit Atoll, and nearby shipping.

As US invasion force approaches the Marshalls, B-24's, attacking from bases in the Gilberts, maintain dat and night attacks (both multiple-plane missions and single-plane attacks at intervals) against Maloelap, Jaluit, Aur Atoll, Wotje, and Mille. 9 B-25's from Tarawa also carry out strike against shipping and shore installations at Wotje. 18 A-24's, supported by 12 P-40's hit Jaluit. 12 P-39's, operating in flights of 4 aircraft, patrol and strafe Mille all day to deny use of the A/F to the enemy.

451st Bomb Gp (B-24) becomes operational, making a total of 9 HB gps in Fifteenth AF. B-17's hit A/Fs and landing grounds at Villaorba, Maniago, and Lavariano. B-24's bomb Udine A/F and Fier radar station. P-38's escort B-17's on Villaorba and Maniago missions, and P-38's and some British Spitfires escort B-24's on Udine mission. P-47's carry out sweep over Villaorba area. The Hbs and ftrs claim over 60 airplanes shot down and a number destroyed on the ground.
