68 HBs of VIII BC strike Saint-Nazaire U-boat base in first attack on
that installation since 23 Nov 42, and the heaviest attack to date
against submarine bases. Formation (instead of individual) precision
bombing is used for the first time by VIII BC, and considerable
damage is done to dock area. There is heavy ftr opposition, and
German flak is thrown up in an effective predirected barrage rather
than in the usual attempt to track the bmrs. 7 aircraft are lost and
47 damaged; 70 men are missing and 5 killed.

Zeros shot down in the air battle. Anticipating that the Japanese

aircraft there, the MBs and ftrs attack town of Lashio. This is last
raid by CATF before fuel shortage grounds the ftrs for the remainder

Ground supply lines to Mount Austen battle area reopen after 3 days
of being closed because their extension outran the capacity of the
native carriers. During the 3 days, B-17's from Henderson Field
airlift rations, water, and ammo to the troops, using what improvised
cargo parachutes are available and in many cases wrapping the
supplies in burlap or canvas and pushing them out.
