Cantiga CSM 408 of Las Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X

The Squire who was Pierced by an Arrow

Folio 16 recto of codex Florencia Ms Banco Rari 20

A squire, a man of noble birth, was badly wounded by an arrow while fighting in Lombardy.
The arrow was shot from a crossbow and struck him in the side.
The squire was so badly injured, he was certain he would die.
He commended himself to the Virgin.
The arrow was drawn out cleanly from his other side. Instantly the wound healed, leaving no visible scar.
Everyone who saw this praised Holy Mary of Salas and advised the squire to go there on pilgrimage.
