Cantiga 266 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X
The Beam that Fell on the Congregation
Wood, stone, sand and lime were brought to Castrogeriz for the building of a church dedicated to the Virgin.
Many people gave offerings to pay for the construction of the church, the tower, and the porch.
One day, when a great crowd of people were gathered in the church, listening to a sermon, a beam fell down on them from above.
Even though there were many people packed tightly together, the Virgin saved them all from injury.
[In normal circumstances], nothing could have fallen from the ceiling without wounding someone or destroying something.
The people, who were frightened but unscathed, gave thanks to the Virgin.
