Left of Cantiga 175 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X

The Pilgrim to Santiago who was Wrongly Hanged
A German pilgrim travelled with his son to Santiago de Compostela.
On the way, they stayed at an inn in Toulouse.
A heretic, who owned the inn, planted a silver cup in the son’s sack and accused him of theft. On order of the magistrate, the son was arrested, charged, and hanged.
His father mourned the boy, but continued on his way to Santiago de Compostela.
The father then returned to Toulouse and visited the site of his son’s death. The son, still hanging on the gallows, spoke to his father, explaining that the Virgin had kept him alive. The father called witnesses to see the boy, who was then removed from the gallows.
The heretic was summoned and cast into a fire.
