Cantiga 174 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X
The Knight who Cut out his Tongue
A knight was devoted to the Virgin and loved her dearly.
One day, he lost a game of dice and began to curse God and the Virgin.
After he had said these things, he regretted them deeply. Weeping, he cut off his tongue with a knife.
He went to his lodgings and lay in bed in great pain. He prayed to the Virgin to forgive him.
He fell asleep and the Virgin appeared to him. She promised to heal him because he trusted in her and had shown remorse.
She put his hand in his mouth and healed his tongue. He was so well that he never again suffered pain in his mouth, tongue or teeth.
