Cantiga 145 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X

The Gold Given to John, the Patriarch of Alexandria
John, the Patriarch of Alexandria, was a very generous and pious man. He always gave alms to the poor and unfortunate. A famine, caused by drought and war, struck the region.

John gave away everything except the clothes he was wearing.

He prayed to the Virgin for aid.

On his way to mass one morning, he encountered a handsome, well-dressed youth. The youth conferred with John and gave him a large quantity of gold—-even more than the Emperor Nero had had when he burned Rome.

At mass, John prayed that the source of the gold would be revealed to him. He was told that Christ had given it to him at the Virgin’s request because of his charitable acts.

News of the miracle spread and the people praised the Virgin.
