Cantiga 127 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X

The Young Man who Kicked his Mother
A young man was bickering with his mother and kicked her. Wounded and weeping she asked the Virgin to avenge the outrage.

The Virgin caused the man to suffer great pain and he went to make his confession. He begged his mother’s forgiveness, and asked her to accompany him on pilgrimage to the Virgin’s church.

She agreed, but when they arrived, the man could not go inside. Although the people tried to drag him in, they could not budge him.

The priests came out of the cathedral and told him to make confession. He explained that he had already done so, and they instructed him to cut off his foot.

The man amputated his foot and immediately entered the church. His mother was very upset, and, prostrating herself in front of the altar, prayed to the Virgin to restore it.

She dreamed that the statue told her to replace her son’s foot, stroking it and invoking Mary’s name. She did as she was told, and the man’s foot was renewed. The people praised the Virgin and the priests said “amen” and rang all the bells.
