Cantiga 97 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X
The Slandered Man who was Exonerated
A courtier named Matthew was slandered. The king summoned him.
Matthew grew distressed and prayed to the Virgin; he also donated a luxurious cloth to her church.
Then, fearing that he would be punished or killed, he went to meet the king.
The king asked Matthew whether he had committed the alleged crimes. Matthew denied the charges and suggested that the king summon one of his accusers so as to best judge the matter.
The king appointed an impartial man to uncover the truth. He wrote a report exonerating Matthew and sent it to the king.
The King realised that the man had been falsely accused and he never believed the slanderers again.
