Cantiga 22 of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X
The Wounded Farmer
A farmer, Matthew, was threshing millet in Armenteira. A knight, who had quarrelled with Matthew's lord, attacked him.
Stabbed by lances, Matthew called on the Virgin.
The lances could not pierce him.
When struck by a javelin, he remained unharmed.
His attackers acknowledged the miracle, begged his pardon and repented.
The farmer went on pilgrimage to Rocamadour.
Note the men equipped with javelin as well as spear.
