Churchills at Dieppe

14th Army Tank Regiment
(The Calgary Regiment (Tank))

Introduction

The raid on Dieppe on 19 August 1942 has remained a controversial battle to this day, and it is not the intention of STEEL CHARIOTS to enter into the debate. Rather, we intend to illustrate the markings carried by the Churchill tanks that equipped the 14th Army Tank Regiment (The Calgary Regiment (Tank)) on that date. Dieppe was the first time a Canadian armoured regiment was to enter battle in World War II, the Churchill tank's introduction to combat, the first use of tanks in an amphibious action, and the first time that the new Tank Landing Craft (TLC) was used. For those reasons alone, Dieppe proves to be an interesting armour subject for the armour historian and modeller alike.
