Seven Years’ War Austrian Dragoons
UniformInfo - Military Modelling magazine
Q.
Sirs,
Could you please inform me about the uniform details of the Austrian dragoons during the Seven Years War.
Tamworth, Staffs. D. W. Britton.
A.
There were twelve regiments of dragoons in the Austro-Hungarian Army during the Seven Years War.
The uniform comprised the ubiquitous black felt, three-cornered hat of the period with the imperial golden yellow and black cockade and a loop and button in the same colour as the buttons of the coat.
A bunch of oak leaves was worn in the hat during campaigns as a field sign — ʺFeldzeichenʺ.
The double breasted coat of the period generally had buttoned back lapels and
long skirts, which were folded back to reveal the coloured linings and had deep cuffs.
The waistcoats were long skirted and distinguished by buttons grouped either in pairs or singly.
Some regiments had no lapels on the coats and waistcoats which were hooked closed with hooks and eyes.
The breeches were worn in long jacked boots with buckled on spurs.
The regiments had a pouchbelt and sword belt and a carbine carried on a swivel.
