KUMLA FRESCO DEPICTING LATE MEDIEVAL WEAPONRY

Handguns were used from the very early days of gunpowder in the fourteenth century. This fresco, dating from the end of the fifteenth century, in the Kumla Church in Sweden, shows that handguns were used alongside all the other projectile weapons, especially the longbow. The handgunner on the left is, unlike the other soldiers, not wearing any armor. His weapon is a simple iron tube with a long extension at the rear which serves as the “handle.”
