The cannon's breeches are referenced as Fig. 151a in Armies of the Middle Ages, Volume 1 by Ian Heath:
The object depicted in 151a, from the same source, is a movable breech called a chamber which was secured in position in a gun by use of leather-covered wedges. Such chambers contained the charge used to fire the gun and were employed in many early cannon.
