Folio 183v
Gideon selects those Israelites who drink from their hands, to fight against Midian.
Beside an expanse of water which extends across the page, Gideon's men lie flat, crouch or kneel; they drink by stretching out their heads to lap the water, or by carrying the water to their mouths in their hands. Gideon, standing on the right and wearing a jerkin with a helmet and mail headpiece, chooses those who will accompany him into battle: with his stick, he points out the three hundred men who are drinking from their hands.
