A detail of Vanni's fresco of the battle of Sinalunga in 1363 in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. The confusion and horror of a medieval cavalry mélée are obvious, while towards the bottom of the fresco the dead seem already to have been stripped of their armour and their wounds can be seen. For condottieri of this period, the majority of serious battlefield wounds were fatal.
